Our Creative Lead
Joel Clements, BFA, GDC, RGD
Principal, Art Director
I am the principal and art director at Brainstorm Studio. I’m the guy answering the phone, responding to emails, and leading the creative side on all of projects. I work with a bunch of great people in my support network including graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, trade printers, code writers, and marketing professionals. I find this business model keeps costs down for my clients, while allowing me to assign the right people to a project to achieve the best results – on time, and on budget.
My career in visual communication design spans over twenty years working for a variety of employers from package design firms to marketing agencies. I have designed product packaging, corporate identities (logos), branding, marketing and advertising materials, retail promotions, and responsive websites (like this one).
During the course of my career, I have worked with clients such as Food & Consumer Products of Canada, Frito-Lay, Kraft, Maple Leaf Sports + Entertainment, Microsoft, Ridley Windows, and PepsiCo.
I received a Bachelor of Fine Art (Specialized Honours) in Visual Communication Design from York University in 1993. I was “headhunted” while still attending York, and went directly from my last class to a position in packaging design for a major manufacturer. From there I moved to a small agency working exclusively for the music industry designing CD packaging for some of the top names in music including The Mavericks, and Country Superstar Reba McEntire.
In 2002 I was hired by Capital C Communications, at the time one of Canada's most successful marketing agencies. In the next four-and-a-half years I moved up the ranks from Intermediate Graphic Designer to Art Director.
I left Capital C in 2006, a victim to restructuring when they were bought out by a big conglomerate, and started Brainstorm Studio. I can't say I never looked back, because my time there was instrumental in my career and “the boss”, Tony Chapman, continues to be an inspiration and mentor to me.
I teach graphic design and photography part-time at several post-secondary institutions in the GTA, and I love to travel with my wife (and my camera!).
